QuestionWe had to replant some trees a year after intial planting because we were told
they were too deep. How can I tell if some of the other trees planted in the last
couple years are okay or too deep? Particularly, maples and dogwood in the
Northwest. Thanks.
AnswerTrees with root ball at the time of planting should be planted with the top of the root ball even with the ground level. The main concern is not to pile up soil or mulch on the trunk. If the tree has been planted for a year and is growing ok I would leave it a lone. Replanting may cause more damage than the too deep. I would if you think the tree is too deep just remove some soil from around the trunk leaving indention around the tree.
