our trees are dropping a lot more acorns this year than ever before.  we live on long island new york, any reason for this to happen.  it's almost like a lawn of acorns instead of grass

Oaks acorns crops will vary each year depending on the weather. About every third year they have good crops. The acorn will stay on the tree fro two years so a frost during the flowering (spring) can destroy an acorn crop two years from now. Conversely good weather in the spring and a low insect population will result in a good or large crop of acorns.
