QuestionI have a young birch tree with 3 trunks in a large pot and plan to plant it in the next few days. Can the 3 trunks be separated and planted in separate holes without killing the trees?
AnswerIf the tree was grown from seed they maybe three plants--if the tree was a seedling when you got it it more then likely is a branches trunk. When you remove the tree from the pot look at the root system and see if it is one system or three separate trees. If it is one you could try and cut the three apart but this may damage the seedlings. If they are three systems gently pull the roots apart and plant. You can leave them as is and plant the three together--then let them grow say a year or so and select the best trunk to be the tree trunk and cut the others.
