QuestionEastern NC, Dogwood 10 inches at base and about 25 ft tall. Good foliage. Bark is separating from the tree and there is a patch about a foot sqaure missing completely. Bare wood is dark and has a white fungus growing on it. The rest ot the bark of the main trunk is falling off if mildly touched. This is occuring from the base to about a foot after the specimen y's into branches (3 to 5 ft). Is it to late? What can be done to help this tree to be healthy again? No bugs noted other than a few small ants crawling up and down.
AnswerIf the tree's foliage is good it should be ok--not sure why it is loosing the bark. I would call the local office of the N.C. Division of Forestry (state agency) and ask one of their Foresters to come out and take a look. This is a free service and an on the ground inspection should be able to ID any problems. Here is their web page link to the County offices information.
