Cedar tree fertilizer

Question
Hi, I planted 19 emerald cedar trees this spring 4-5 feet high, they all seem to be doing fine, I was thinking of giving each tree a miracle gro stick, they say to fertilize in early spring or late fall do you think it would hurt to give them this fertilizer now?

Answer
Do not fertilize the trees for at least a year and I would really wait for two years. Trees usually do not need much fertilizer. Too much fertilizer will burn the new roots and cause problems.   Can cause root burn from high salts. Trees will show symptoms of yellowing or nutrient deficiency and brown up entirely if new roots do not form. Death usually occurs in the first year after transplanting. A layer of fertilizer is often found in the root zone when this shows up as damage.

You can give a supplement of chemical fertilizer
like a rhodo/ azalea fertilizer or an organic fertilizer such as cotton seed husk but in general it won't be needed.
I wound not use the sticks they concentrate too much fertilizer in on place damaging the roots. I would watch the trees and if they show a yellowing or lighter green then use the fertilizer. If they are a good color of green leave the fertilizer off.
