New Globe Willow - Maybe too much rain

Question
I live in Oklahoma City where we have had soooo much rain. In late May I had a Globe Willow planted in my front yard, decent sized. I was out of town last week and came back to most of the leaves yellow and half of them on the ground. My worry is that a Bald Cypress died in the same spot last year - ground is predominantly clay. Any advice? I have turned off my sprinklers because of all the rain...

Answer
First check to see if the tree is still alive. Hardwoods during adverse weather conditions (drought or too much water) will drop their leaves. Start near the end of a branch and scrape a small bit of bark off the branch and if the color under the bark is green the branch is still alive. If the color under the bark is brown the branch is dead at this point on the branch. Continue down the branch checking at interval until you find green prune he dad part off. I would think you will find green and the tree is still alive. When the weather gets back to "normal" the tree should put out new leaves.

One other thought--you did not say if this was the only tree in the yard but if it is and you put out a product called weed and feed for the lawn the herbicide in the fertilizer will kill trees. It is better to put out fertilizer only and spray a herbicide for the weeds in the lawn.
