QuestionI PLANTED 6 RIVER BIRCH 14FT TALL THEY EACH HAVE A BUBBLER
THAT WATER 25 MIN EACH MORNING THE LOT WAS RED CLAY SO I BROUGHT IN TOP SOIL TO PLANT IN AND THE ARE WELL MULCHED ABOUT 4 INCHES.
PROBLEM: THEY LOOK GOOD BUT I KEEP GETTING SOME YELLOW LEAFS, THEY FALL OFF THEN NEW LEAFS COME ON. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG ? OR DO THE NEED SOMETHING BECAUSE OF ALL THE RED CLAY UNDERNEATH.

AnswerPlanting in the summer causes the tree much stress. You can expect some leaf fall. Sounds like you did most things correct (except the time of the year to plant). Keep it watered and it should make it but do not expect much growth this year. River birch by it's name require a great deal of water. Check the soil under the mulch and see that it is moist down to 6 inches or so. The mulch should not be piled up on the trunk of the tree, this will heat up the bark area. All you are trying to do this year is help it survive the heat. Do not fertilize it until it has been planted a year, in this case I would wait until the spring of 2009 to start fertilizing.
