wild cherry infestation

Question
We recently had two wild cherry trees develop an infestation with wood boring beetles. They were injected by an arborist.  We live in northwest Illinois, and there is a spreading problem with the ash borer beetle, but not found in our county yet. We have young maple and ash trees recently planted, and also many wild hardwoods. Is there anything we can do to protect our other trees. Could the beetle problem be from the ash borer beetle?

Answer
No the ash borer does not infest cherry trees. There are numerous borer some beetles some moths. Normally a borer that attacks one tree species will not attack another species. There should be no problem with the borer that infested the cherry attacking the maples or ash or the other hardwood tree nearby. there are sprays that will prevent attack of borers a couple of the newer ones are merit and Onxy both sprayed on the trunk of the tree will prevent attack. Ask the Arborist about spraying one of these on your nearby trees. It is generally not recommended and most folks wait until they see signs of borers (boring dust) before spraying. IF you are worried about the borers go ahead and spray. It should protect the tree for 3-4 months.
