QuestionI live in Brunswick, GA., zone 8b-9.I bought a thornless honey locust 2 yrs ago which was shipped. The nursery had cut the top of it off, I presume for shipping purposes. It is 6 ft tall, and now has 3 branches approx. 1 ft long each, and one branch trying to grow from the top of one these branches. It has a fair amount of leaves and seems healthy, other than it hasn't gained any height. Should they have cut the top?
AnswerNo topping the tree was not the best thing to do. Sounds like you may have a tree that is now forked with three forks. Since the tree is young probably one of these leaders will take over as the new top and the others will be branches or forks. About the only thing that can be done now is let it grow and see if a new top leader takes over. If it does next spring prune the others off OR you could just let it all grow it will not hurt the tree but will make it more bushier than one straight stem. The reason it has not grown much in height is the growth that would have been put on one stem is being put on three stems.
