QuestionEACH YR. ABOUT THIS TIME (MID TO LATE jUNE IN VT) I see spittle on my pagoda dogwood (just about flowering time). This spawns small white worms which grow into large white worms that eat the leaves. I am told that I can't legally get a tree co. to spray anything very toxic in my city. I am trying a spray of plain water and/or a solution of 1 tsp. of dish detergent in a gallon of water. Is either of these effective? Should I resort to a Sevin solution? And what ARE these creatures? Thanks for any help/advice.
AnswerIf the trees are small enough to spray the foliage I would spray with a sevin insecticide solution. This will kill the insect. I am not sure what insect you have but the sevin is an insecticide that will control most leaf feeding insects. The water and detergent alone will not effect the insect population.
