QuestionRecently, I had to cut down a silver maple in my front yard. Soon the stump will be ground down. There are some surface roots that have sapped the area of water and nutrients. How do I kill these roots? Will I be able to plant another tree once the stump is ground?
AnswerPaint a herbicide called Roundup on the stump or on any cut roots. The roots will take up the herbicide and kill the root system. Roundup will kill any plant if it gets on the leaves so make sure you do not spray or get any Roundup on any plant that you do not want tot kill. The stump will be ground about 6-10 inches deep so there will still be a stump under the ground. It will be hard to plant right over this stump. You can plant anything you want and there will be problem with the old tree stump.
