filling small cavities in a tree

Question
I have a tree with four holes from a satellite dish being mounted there a few months ago.  I have since relocated the dish to a post and wonder the best way to handle the holes, which are about 1/4 inch in diameter and four inches long.  The tree is large and well established, probably 20 to 24" at this point (which is about 15' above the ground).

Before I read your posting about cavities, I'd been thinking of using silicon caulk.  Do you think something else (or nothing) would be better?  Should I put the lag bolts back in place after I remove the dish? (I used a second dish so the original is still in place).

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Do nothing to the holes. The tree will heal over the wounds by itself. Anything put on or in the holes will stop or slow this healing process. You can spray the areas with an insecticide for borers and this will protect the tree from attack. Check with your local nursery for an insecticide for borers. Do not put the bolt back into the tree.
