QuestionI have what i believe to be a yoshino cherry tree. In Arkansas we had a really warm March, and the tree had already began flowering. We then had a cold spell in mid April, 26 degree temps for two nights, and the tree has not begun to put leaves out yet after the freeze damage. What can I do to help?
AnswerThere is not anything except make sure it has water during times of no rainfall. You can check and see if the tree is still alive. Start at the end of an upper branch and scrape a small bit of bark off the twig. If the color under the bark is green then the branch is alive at this point on the branch. If the color is brown then the branch is dead at this point on the branch. If brown, keep going down the branch until you find green under the bark. If you find green the tree should re leaf out within the month and then you can prune the dead parts of the branches off. I would wait until it leafed out again then you can easily tell the dead from the living and will not prune off a live branch.
