QuestionPlease help me care for my unhealthy pear tree. I bought a Cleveland pear tree yesterday and planted it in a large container twice the size of the root ball. I removed the burlap sack when I planted the tree, which I now have been told is incorrect. Too make matters worse the pear was in very poor condition to begin with - sagging leaves and some with brown edges. Is there anything I can do to aid the tree's recovery or is there a certain care regiment I could follow to insure it a healthy life. Your help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
AnswerI would take the tree back to where you bought it and get a healthy one as a replacement. There is not sense in starting with a sick tree and then being disappointed when it dies. Sounds like it had dried out before you bought it. Not knowing where you bought it --but I would recommend that you use a nursery as a source rather than a garden center at a "Walmart" type store. In any case Take it back and get a good health looking tree.
Then dig the hole about twice the size of the root ball on the tree and remove the burlap trying not to disturb the root or the soil around them. Fill the hole with good top soil, water, mulch with not more than 3 inches mulch to hold moisture. Do not fertilize until the tree is a year old this will give the roots time to grow.
