QuestionMy cousin has birch trees in his lawn - we're in zone 9 - but the roots are invading his lawn. How much of the roots can he trim without harming the tree, please?
AnswerIf you are talking about the roots exposed above the ground and cutting them down to ground level--this will allow fungi to enter the roots and could kill them. I would add top soil over the exposed roots but do not add more then 3 inches. More than this amount may compact the soil damaging the roots system.
