QuestionI live in north Alabama and have a question about an oak tree. The tree is water oak(small leaves) and is appx. 20" dia. and is 15 plus years old. The tree is appx 12 feet from the house, which is brick on a slab. Is the tree too close and should I have it removed? I'm concerned that roots will get under the house and crack the slab foundation and brick siding. Thanks, Mervin
AnswerA water oak planted 12 feet fro the house will not give you any problem with the root system. Generally water oak does not have root problems as far as foundations etc, go. The root system is shallow and the roots 12 feet out from the trunk will not be of the size that can cause problems. The tree has been there a while and the roots seek the least resistance which will be away from the foundation. I would just enjoy the shade.
