QuestionI have about 70 (beautiful condition) eastern cedars (all about 70 inches tall) on my central kentucky property and I want to transplant 30 or 40 of them to different areas (property line, wind blocks...)
I have transplanted many trees previously and have had much success. But never in this volume, and never pine. Being that this would take probably a few weeks of hard labor to do manually, is there a machine that professionals would use to make this a cinch to do?
I have seen devices that basically dig a perfect root ball/hole but I'm not sure what I would need.
Do you have any special tips that would help? I would guess that September-November would be my best months to transplant them. I think I also have special considerations with cedars because of tap roots.
AnswerThese machines are called Vermeer spades. They come in different sizes. Here is the web link to their site.

They have several dealers near Lexington here is the link to their contact information. These folks more then likely sell the equipment but would know contractors who move trees

The best time to move the trees would be February-March. After the freezing winter but before spring.
These spades will solve the problem of the rootball size and will be much faster and easier then hand digging. I do not have a feel of the cost to move this size tree.
