magnolia tree fungus

Question
i have two large magnolia trees in front yard.  one is healthy and the other has developed a white fungus like appearance in the bark and the leaves are thinning and have dark spots on them.  I am afraid the tree is dying and need your advice on saving this tree and keeping the fungus or whatever it is from spreading to the other healthy magnolia which is about 15 feet from it.  i have recently had them both pruned slightly only smaller branches thinking that was the problem with one getting more sun than the other.  i also thought it might be part due to the drought we have had here in fort worth, texas.

any help would be greatly appreciated.   the tree trimmer suggested that i apply a product called "seven" to the tree and spray it from top to bottom.  do you agree with his suggestion as i do not want to do anything to damage the tree further.

please help as i do not think the tree will last much longer and is such a beautiful magnolia.  i look forward to your suggestions and appreciate your time and consideration of my problem.

best regards,

pamela

Answer
Sounds like it maybe an insect--possibally aphids or bark lice. The Sevin is an insecticide to kill the insects. I would check with the Fort Worth Urban Forester and ask them for assistance in identifying the problem. Their contact information is
