QuestionI have a healthy 7-foot red maple that I would like to transplant. Is the fall a good time to do this?
AnswerYes the fall is the best time. A real inportant area is digging a good root ball with the tree and digging a good hole for the transplant. The root ball needs to be about 12 inches across for every 1 inch of diameter of the tree (a 3 inch tree needs a 36 inche across root ball) the depth should be about 18-24 inches. The new hole should be twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the root ball, fill with good potting soil and mulch with not more than 3 inches deep of mulch.
