QuestionI have a 2 or 3 year old weeping cherry tree that was recently damaged when a large oak tree fell on it during a storm. One or two brances are broken and there is a gash on the trunk with some of the bark peeled away. What should I do to save this tree?
AnswerPrune the broken and/or dead branches and also cut the loose bark off that is peeled away. Cut the loose bark back to the wound surface so there is little jagged edges. This will allow the tree to heal over the wound as it grows. The bark with time will grow over the wound. The broken branches should be pruned back to the main trunk so there is not a stub left. Beyond that there is not much that can be done. Next spring fertilize the tree with a
13-13-13 fertilizer or you could check with the local nursery/garden type store for a fertilizer for trees. This will speed up the healing.
