morphed pear tree

Question
I have a bartlett pear tree that I planted as a three year old tree three years ago(making it 6 now).. after the first year it bloomed and made three pears..then it began growing a linb just above the ground at the base..that has become the tree now as the original tree is still the same size and the "limb" it now around 18 foot tall and full of limbs..my problem is it didn't bloom (never has)..and has large pointed spikes all over it..any idea what has happened? thanx

Answer
Most bartlett pears are grafted on a root stock normally some type of dwarft or drought resistant plant. One of these is Quince. Sometimes a sprout from the rootstock is allowed to grow and it is not a "bartlett" pear. I feel this is what is going on in your situation. The "original" tree is the true bartlett. I would prune the other "limb" and encourage the orginal tree. Fertilizing it will help it grow and produce flowers.
