QuestionHello, I have a skyline honeylocust tree that was planted about 10 years ago. The last couple years I have noticed a couple of roots coming up above the ground. One is headed towards my driveway and the other is headed towards the foundation of my house. Why do trees do this? The soil has a lot of clay - is that why? I don t know if I need to be concerned about this. What do you recommend? Thanks in advance. Joe
AnswerThe root systems of trees are normally the size of the crown spread and are in the first foot of soil. Some trees have roots that will as they get older be on the surface. These should be protectd by adding just enough soil to cover them. This protects the roots from lawn mower damage. I would not be concerned about the roots "heading toward you drive or foundation", this should not become a problem.
