QuestionI have what I believe is called a globe willow, and it is being attacked by little fly s and grubs. The tree is dis creating a white sour smelling fluid that attract small fly s. I have peeled a little of the bark, and i have found some grubs. How can I fix this?
AnswerI think what you are discribing is a disease called Frothy Flux. It is the result of a yeast or other saprophytic or secondary organism that invades the tree through a wound, causing the fermentation of the plant tissue. In your case there is also a borer , an insect causing some of the problem. For the borer check with your local garden/ nursery type store and get an insecicide for borers. This sprayed on the bark will solve the borer attack. This may also be the cause of the frothy flux allowing an entry point for the condition. The recomendation for frothy flux is keeping the tree healthy. Here is a web link that discribes frothy flux and the borer and gives recomendation for control. http://www.coopext.colostate.edu/TRA/PLANTS/index.html#http://www.coopext.colost...
