Worms in my red maple!!!

Question
 Hi Jim,
I was looking over my maple and found soars on the bark of my maple so I took a razor knife and cut open the soar and found the inside to be rotted with a small white worm that has a brown head. there a several of these (10-12) on the lower part of my tree. I have pictures of the worms wich I took useing a microscope and digital camera that I could email to you if you have an address to send them to. The worms are between 1/4 and 3/8 of an inch long and seam to boar straight into the tree.
Any help would be greatly app.

Answer
This more than likely Sugar Maple Borer. Here is a web link for information on this insect and controls. They do not mention it but you can spray an insecticide on the bark and control these. One of the newer insecticides is Onyx or check with your local garden/nursery type store for an insecicide for Borers. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/howtos/ht_mapleborer/mapleborer.htm
