Purple Plum (ornamental)

Question
We have two purple plums that were transplanted 18 years ago (making them approximately 20-22 years old from "birth").  One is completely dead and the other is very nearly dead.  The noticeable process of decline started two years ago.  I assumed the problem was pests or disease but I have been told that these trees have an approximate 20 year life span.  Can this be true?

Regards,
Phil

Answer
Yes contrary to most peoples thoughts trees also get old and die and do have life spans. The purple leaf plum has a average life span of 10-15 years so I would say that is more then likely the problem. I suggest replacing the tree with a ne "young" tree.
