QuestionOur neighbor's river birch trees have roots that have already cracked our driveway and are raised over her front yard. The three trees beside our concrete are over 20' tall. Would it hurt her trees if we cut the roots next to our sidewalk. The roots are on our property.
AnswerIt depends on what "hurt" means. what it will probally do is kill or stunt the foliage on the side of the tree near the cut roots. It will not kill the tree. If it were me I would dig a trench along the driveway and cut these roots and keep them from cracking the drive. The trench does not need to be wide but should be about a foot deep. This may have to be done at least every other year to keep the roots from growing back.
