QuestionI want to plant this tree ( October Glory )in the Southern Adirondacks (zone 5). When I went to the tree place, they had 15 foot high trees that cost hundreds. Can I get a much younger tree for less money ? And where should I go for it ?
AnswerYes you can plant smaller trees. The 15 foot trees are quite expensive, they are usually by the inch of diameter. I would suggest a container grown tree (in a plastic pot). Make sure you dig the hole twice the size of the container and twice the depth. fill with good potting soil and mulch the area around the hole with a good mulch. Here is an example of the costs savings (I know nothing about this nursery but added it as a cost example only) http://www.octoberglorymaple.com/
Check with local nurserys for container grown OR check the internet for nurseries close to you.
