QuestionWe have 3 flowering purple leaf plum trees, all planted last spring. This spring 2 bloomed and leafed out beautifully, one did not bloom & the leaves are on the lower half of the tree closes to the trunk and very, very small, maybe 1/2" long and 1/8" wide or less. We are zone 7-central California, & are having a very long and confusing spring. 70 degree week followed by cold and wet one, & back 'n forth. Will this tree probably revive itself next spring or is this a sign of a problem with the tree.?
AnswerCarol,
I would be willing to bet from your desccription that the 3rd tree is having problems with its root system and is unable to store adequate carbohydrates to support flowering and leaf development.
I am always quick to pull the trigger on plants having problems, because as gardeners our instinct is to try to baby a plant through problems, when it is cheaper time- and money-wise to replace these plants.
I would pull and replace this plant.
Good gardening
