QuestionI recently stubbled across some type of tree (shrub) on the property that I hunt and fish on. The track of land is in a little town called Blackstock,SC which is located between Columbia,SC and Charlotte,NC. The shrub or tree seems to grow about 10-15 feet tall. They seem to grow in clusters and really do not have defined limbs or branches. They top off and seem to weep towards the ground. The bases all seem to be between 1-3 inches in diameter and are the color of a normal hardwood tree;however, the limbs are all a dark green and covered with long thorns. These shrubs produce a small fruit a little smaller than a peach. In a lot of ways it looks like a peach, but creates a strong aroma of citrus. I have asked a lot of farmers around the area and have been left puzzled with the different answers, none of which seemed to be certain of what it is. Kumquates and hog plums have been mentioned a couple times, but do not really look like these bushes or whatever you want to call them.I would appreciate the help identifing this.
sincerely,
Chris
AnswerChris,
I remember this tree from the time I spent at Clemson University.
The tree is called Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata).
Good luck
