Question
When is the ideal time to prune balsam? Health of trees is excellent.These have not been pruned for 3 or 4 years and look bad.
Can they be pruned now (Zone 5) or should it wait until spring.
Is air temperature important when pruning?
How much can be taken off?  
Do I need a professional arborist?
Should hand or electic pruning be done?

Since you asked about the arborist I am assuming you are open to this option.  Balsam like all conifers must be pruned carefully as they do not have the latent buds in their stems to produce new growth.  If you remove too mush material you are left with a naked tree.  Call a pro to consult and possibly do the job.
