How and when to move Apple tree?

Question
Hello,

I have a small apple tree that I would like to move from one side of my yard to the other.  The tree is about 8 feet tall, with a 3 inch trunk and about a 6 foot spread.  It is being shaded by other trees, which is why I want to move it.  I have read a bit about moving it, and I think I can do it myself.

1. When is the best time to do the job?
2. How large should I dig the root ball?
3. Are there any fertilizers or other chemicals I can use to increase my odds of success?
4. Any tricks you can think of to help make this move easier on the tree?

Thanks,

Bob

Answer
Bob,

The best time to move this tree is during the fall and dig as big a root ball as you can without getting a hernia.  Use a general purpose 10-10-10, about half a handful, mixed into the soil around the sides of the rootball.

Once completed do not expect great fruit next year.  You have just destroyed the root system and it will require some time to recover.  Moving the tree in the fall helps with this process.

Good luck

Gary
