QuestionI have a Pine Tree, not sure of species, maybe Douglas Fir about 15' tall that was transplanted last year. Unfortunately, our dogs dug some holes around it and chewed off the lower branches. I fear some of the root system may have been exposed. I treated the chewed branches with wound treatment, wrapped the trunk with wire. Refilled the holes and put wire around a 10' area and covered with mulch. The tree appeared to be holding its own but as fall is coming it is turning yellow from the inside out. Is it too late or is there something I can do to try to save this tree. It is the best shade the dogs have in the side yard.
Thanks in advance for this service and your time to answer.
AnswerRandy,
Dogs can be blamed for a lot of things, but do not be so quick in this case.
Unless you had a tree company come in with a tree spade I suspect the transplanting is the cause. Moving a large tree such as this causes extreme damage to the root system which may take a year or two for symptoms to manifest themselves.
Contact a CERTIFIED arborist for an on-site opinion of the situation.
Good luck
