QuestionHi! I've read that I should give my hemlocks plenty of water during October to help fend off winter burn. I live in upstate New York.
My question is: is there any reason why I should avoid watering on a day when they're predicting frost overnight?
Thanks.

AnswerDavid,
Water away. Many conifers are lost during the winter due to dessication. The plants just dry out. You might consider using soaking hoses around the base of the plants. I do not think that a coming frost would damage foliage that may still be wet from irrigation but watering from the bottom would ensure against it.
good luck
