QuestionI received a red japanese maple as a gift last fall. It has done very good until a few days ago. I noticed a few leaves had turned a lighter color and were drooping. I clipped them off. Today, I walked out and half the tree has light droopy leaves. I don't see any insects at a glance. It is in a large (24") container with good drainage. Thank you for any help.
AnswerSharon,
My first thought goes right to water. Since it is in a container it may be easy to let the media dry out a bit. You say it has good drainage, I would start watering more frequently.
On the other hand, if the media is moist and the leafs are droopy it may mean there is a root problem which may be the result of too much water.
Does this sound confusing? It can be. I would take a sample of the leafs or even the entire plant if the container is not too big to your local extension office and let them do an analysis of the problem.
Good luck,
Gary
