pear tree vs. ivory silk

Question
i'm having the darndest time trying to decide whether to buy an ivory silk tree or a pyrus chanticleer. i love them both but can only buy one. could you comment on some of the major differences between them, and i'm also curious to know which one YOU would choose (and why). i live in toronto, canada.

thanks!

Answer
Debra,

You have chosen two trees with some similar characteristics.  Both are smaller trees with white blooms, but there differences.

Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' - profuse white blooms in the spring, a bit later than 'Bradford' with good fall color, maintains a tighter growth habit which makes it good for small areas.  this is a 'Braford' selection.

Syringa reticulata 'Ivory silk' - is a sturdy, compact tree with lots o' white flowers in early summer, little fall color.  Did you know that this tree was developed in Ontario?

Now I have a clear preference here.  I believe that the pears should be pruned as close to the ground as possible.  I think my intentions are clear here.  I do not like this plant, actually any of the 'Brdaford' pears.  They are pretty for 4 and one half days during the year and drop branches with every storm that comes through.

My suggestion is to go with the Lilac.

Good luck in the garden.

Gary
