QuestionI have a copper beach tree which seemed to be budding well after the winter period but shortly after the leaves came out, they fell off. The whole process took around a week and none of the other plants in the garden seem to have been effected at all. I think the tree is dead now but want to be sure before chopping it down, how can I tell? Do you have any idea what may have caused his? Before I replace it how do I make sure the same thing will not happen again?
Many thanks

AnswerI can tell you how to determine IF the tree is still alive but from what you discribe I can not determine what may have killed it. To tell if the tree is alive--start at the top (upper branches) and scrape a little of the bark off a branch if the color under the bark is green then the tree is alive at that point on the tree--if the color is brown then it is dead. Keep coming down the tree and branches until you find green at that point on the tree it is alive. If you find green prune off the dead branches. If you do not find any green then the entire tree is dead.
