QuestionSomething ate the tops of my newly planted apple trees. I am assuming it was deer. First do you have any sugestions on helping the trees get through the stress of being eaten on? Second, are there any effective methods, other than a big dog, to keep deer away from my trees? I only have 2 and they are right in my back yard, but the deer come right up and enjoy themselves anyway.
Thank you.
Dan
AnswerTrees that have been top pruned by deer need to have plenty of water-I would water them every other day until they get more growth (on days it does not rain). I would also If the trees are samll make a cage for them out of chicken wire to keep the deer off until they get established. The deer are going after the fertilized seedings as the tree grows they are not as attractive to the deer as now. Here is a web site with a brochure on deer problems around homes and measure to combet them. http://www.aces.edu/pubs/docs/A/ANR-0961/
