When do Oaks start producing acorns

Question
I planted several hundred bare root oak trees two years ago (mixture of swamp oak, white oak, and bur oak).  Most are doing very well and a few are 5-6 feet tall with a 1 1/2" diameter trunk.  Just the other day I noticed tiny acorns on one of the largest trees.  Is this normal?  I've read that oak trees don't produce acorns for 20 years?

Answer
Yes that is normal--oaks will have a few acorns at early ages especially in yeard situations where they get fertilizer and water. When the books say "produce" acorns the mean the tree has enough acorns that the aninals will have a food supply or a large amount that can be gathered to use to replant. Another factor is oaks do not produce large crops of acorns each year so one year it might seem that there are no acorns then another year there will be a bumper crop--normally about every three years. BY the way it will take two years for these "tiny" acorn to ripen into mature acorns.
