Red Oak/Pin Oak

Question
We just moved into a new home and inherited a few trees that we're concerned about.  Namely, placement.

There is a red oak that has been planted 8-10 feet from the house and a pin oak that has been planted on a fairly steep hill.

Both seem to be healthy - what concerns us is the eventual size of both and how that might affect the area's they are planted in.  We're thinking the pin oak will be fine but wonder if we should pull out the red oak before it gets any further established.  Both have been in the ground about 3 years.

Thanks!

Answer
I would not think you would have a problem with an oak 8-10 feet from your house. The root system of oaks is not a problem and that would be the only possible concern. The branches when the tree get large will over hang the house which in the summer will reduce the heat, you will have leaves to contend with in the fall especially if your have a gutter around that side of the house. As the tree matures you will want to make sure the branches do not rub the roof (this can be done by pruning those branches that will hit the house). But overall I think you will benefit from the shade the oak will provide.
