QuestionI have a red maple that is over 30 years old and about 15 feet tall and very healthy. A new red maple sprouted about 5 years ago under the parent tree. It is now about 4 feet tall and I want to move it out from under the parent. I live on the NY / NJ border and all of the leaves from both trees have fallen. Can I transplant now, the ground is still soft, or wait until the spring? Thanks...
AnswerI would wait until spring. Make sure you dig enough of the root system (the main part of the roots are out as far as the branches in the tree crown). When you dig a new hole for the tree make sure it is twice the size of the root ball. I would transplant the tree before the leaf buds break in the spring.
