QuestionThis is more of an "anti tree" question, but I hope you can help. I live in central OK, and have a tree (I think it's a white mulberry) that keeps trying to grow through my fence and will eventually damage it? How can I get rid of it?
Every year, i cut it off as close to the ground as I can. Each year it comes back bigger than before. This year it is about 15 feet high, with mulitple trunks, up to 4 inches thick.
Is there some way to get rid of it before it does serious damage to my fence?
Thanks
Jo
AnswerHardwood tres are great survivers. Their root systems allows them to come back after being cut. To control the sprouting you must kill the root system. The best way is with herbicides. I would recommend next spring cutting the tree trunks and painting the freshly cut stump with a herbicide called Roundup. Roundup can be bought at most garden stores or Walmart. Take a paint brush and cover the freshly cut stump with the concentrated Roundup right of of the can (undiluted). The Roundup will be taken up by the roots and kill them. IF any sprouts do come up spray them with Roundup also. This will take care of your tree problems. A warning though --Roundup will kill any green plant it is sprayed on so make sure you only spray what you want to kill.
