QuestionJim;
I want to dig up a one year old maple tree,and prepare the ball for a 50 mile trip to the new location.
I expect to need burlap,heavy twine,topsoil,and plastic sheathing.
The tree is 0nly 66 inches high and the trunk is about 3/4 inches in diameter.
How do I dig up and prepare the rootball for transport in my station wagon? Thank you ''''''''JOE
AnswerThe equipment you have is good. I would suggest for this size tree you dig a ball about 18 inches round (I would get a piece of string about 9 inches long hold one end at the base of the tree trunk and mark a circle around the tree) this would give the 18 inch ball. Dig down the same distance. Move this ball of "dirt" onto the plastic sheet-wrape the ball with the burlap and tie the top. Replant as soon as possible. The most important part is the digging of the new hole. The new hole should be twice the size of the ball. Place top soil or potting soil in the hole bottom to bring the top of the ball even with the ground surface and fill in the sides with the top soil. I would also suggest that you mulch around the tree just cover the hole surface you dug. Water and you are done.
