QuestionHello, I have a royal palm that seems to be doing fine except I am concerned with the vertical lines all around the top of the trunk. Wondered if you knew what is causing this, i.e. disease or pest. Should I be doing anything to remedy this problem?
Thank you, Christina
AnswerHi Christina, it is actually a common phenomenon with many Palms; the cause is uncertain, but the good news is , unless its in a lower area that might be thinner then the rest of the trunk, therefore putting undue stress on a possible collapse from weight, it is not usually too much of a concern. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service and discuss it with the agent in charge or possibly a Master Gardner there; they will be able to direct you to a local Palm expert who can examine it and determine if there is any cause for alarm. Seeing the cracks up front and personal is really the only way to see how deep they are and if in fact there may be any fungal or insect infestation in the cracks. Nick
