QuestionRe: fallen queen palm.
You were right about the disease. Mushroom looking growths were growing out of the trunk of the tree. Now I am concerned about other aspects of my palms. I bought this house about four years ago and the palms were quite small. I didn't take note of how close to the house some of them were planted and now that they are beginning to clear the house (one story) I am worried about their proximity. Three are about 2 feet from the house, but the one with the largest truck (about two feet) is only now only a foot or so from the house. It is also the closest to my drive and where my SUV is parked. The fronds will have cleared the roof within a year probably. Is there any need to remove one or all before they are even harder to get down?
Also, so far, they are beautiful and look healthy but so did the one that fell down. If mushrooms show up on the trunk of another in the future should I remove it as a precaution?
Answerremove the entire trunk and root system of the infected one that toppled...this is crucial to get the entire spore system out and away; as far as the others,,you will only know when the conch appears, otherwise I would leave them be, even though they are closer then any landscaper would put them to the house. Of utmost importance now though, is removal of that infected palm "and" a good portion of the surrounding soil (both down and around the root system). Ask around for a knowledgeable landscaper and tell him what I said,,,he will most assuredly do what is necessary. Nick
