foxtail palms

Question
Hi Nick,
I was wondering if you take the seed out of the orange fruit of the foxtail palm to germinate it, or do you just put the whole fruit in the mix to germinate?
And how long after the fruit has dropped off the tree, is the seed still viable for germination?

Answer
Hi Jill, take some fine sandpaper and rub both sides of the seed several times to roughen the surface and remove any natural inhibitor (Mother Natures way of slowing the germination rate), then soak the seed for several hours; mix a container of 6 inches of peat and perlite and place the seeds on top,,horizontally,,then cover them with a quarter inch of the same soil and water them everyday, keeping them damp, but not wet. Place the container in a location where they will get warm temps continually. It is waiting game from that point, it can take from a couple of Months to up to a Year for germination. The seeds are at their best when they have been shed from the pod and are viable for several Months. Good luck and have fun!... Nick
