shaping Dracena Margenata

Question
I have a 26yr. old Dracena Margenata that has relocated with me from the east to west coast and back again and considered part of my family. It has three main trunks with a total of 12 tall canes emanatting from them in varying hgts. Is there anyway to prune it periodically to increase the size of the trunks and prevent anymore tall canes without harming the plant? I am also getting brown tips on the leaves. Is this do to underwatering or not enough humidity?
         Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Susan, if you cut a trunk halfway, and replant the top section, it will root and grow,,,meanwhile the bottom section will send out a side shoot just below the cut; this is the usual way of keeping them from getting too lanky.  Keep in mind, that the side shoot will appear as "side shoot", meaning it will not grow directly upward from the cut, but arch outwards and then up. The brown tips are usually from too dry an environment, mist it more frequently to prevent this. I hope this helps....Nick
