QuestionI RECEIVED SOME BANANA PLANTS FROM A FRIEND THAT HAVE BEEN CUT FOR THE WINTER.I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO STORE THEM.THANKS
AnswerCut the crown back to about 2 feet , clean all the soil off the Corm (root ball) then wrap the Corm in newspaper, wet it and put it in a plastic bag. Store it in a dark area (Garage, basement etc.), that will stay above freezing, but below 45 degrees (keeping it from continued growth and allowing it to go dormant). When the newspaper dries out , wet it again,,,but don't soak it! In the spring, when all threats of freeze or frost has past, move it outside and plant it; when new growth begins, water it well with a soluble fertilizer (Miracle-Grow) and then don't let it completely dry out from this point on, keeping it somewhat moist, but no wet feet. Fertilize it once a Month with a cup of a high potassium granular. Nick
