Question
what is this?
I'm trying to identify a plant. It was my grandads who died last week. We know he grew it from seed over many years but we don't know what it is or how to take care of it. It looks a little like a banana plant but the leaves don't have the same cut out sort of bits. At the moment it is taller than the ceiling of the house. The leaves are about 4 foot long and about 1 foot wide. It has not bulb at the bottom. It seems to grow up fromt he base in fan like stems. There is no bark and no flowers. If you could help I'd be grateful. Many thanks Joanne
AnswerIt appears to be a "Bird of Paradise" that is in dire need of a larger container, hence its lanky appearance; A healthy BOP would have a thicker main stem. It grows upwards of 20 feet in the ground (tropics) and likes a lot of water and direct light. Put into a larger container, and it will show its true colors, which will eventally send out a flower that looks like a bird.
