Foxtail palm roots

Question

Foxtail palm between p
Hi Nick, We live in Queensland Australia and have a couple of foxtail palms growing very close to our concrete pool. They are about 8 years old and about 25 to 30 feet tall(8 or 9 metres) and 12 to 18 inches in diameter at the base.
We are concerned that as they are about 1 foot from the pool concrete edge, between a rock wall and the pool that the roots may cause damage to the pool.
There are roots visable above ground which makes us wonder if there is enough room for them to grow. Any advice you can give us would be appreciated.
Regards,
Brian Muir

Answer
Hi Brian, they are pretty much maxed out now , at that height, so I wouldn't be concerned about any damage that may occur from this point on;  Palms have a different type of root system then trees, where a tree will send out woody roots in all directions, Palms have a compact root system that stay contained in a smaller area, and tend to be more fibrous. Often you will see massive Royal Palms (50 feet or taller) growing right up against streets in busy City's and surrounded right up to the base with walkways etc. Nick
