Pygmy Date Palms

Question
QUESTION: I transplanted 9 palms 9 days ago and now I notice the center of 4 of them are dry and brittle in the center and 3 of them have brownish/yellow leaves on the tip (lower leaves) I have water daily (maybe too much) and used a soil for palms for transplanting. Did not use a palm fertilizer was told it would be too much of a shock

ANSWER: Hi Gloria, I seem to be getting a run on Palm transplant problems, they are all pretty similiar; it seems that the adding of the soil to the hole is causing standing water on the roots. When a Palm is transplanted, it must have good drainage, so that the watering every day, which is needed for several weeks, will give the needed irrigation, and then drain off the excess. The hole should contain what came out of it , with a "side dressing" of compost, but not under the roots. You also need to know that there is always a degree of transplant shock, this is normal and will eventually subside. New growth should be normal and healthy and this will be the measure of success or failure. If the new growth is stunted or yellow, then there is a problem. Nick

QUESTION: Well we will see regarding the new growth, I hope part of this is transplant shock. Should I fertilize or wait

Answer
...Go to Home Depot and get a product called "Chelated Palm nutritional spray", its a concentrate that once mixed per directions, is sprayed on in the morning, when the fronds are wet from the dew; the pores (called Stomata..) will readily take in the nutritional spray when it is applied at that time. This should help boost its health.
